A Mouthguard, also know as a night guard, sport guard, sleep guard and TMJ Splint, is a protective device that covers the teeth and gums to prevent and reduce injury to the teeth, arches, lips and gums. These removable dental appliances are molded to fit the upper or lower arches of teeth, providing a protective cushion to help prevent temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ), contact sports injuries, and clenching/grinding disorders.
If a baby tooth is lost before the permanent tooth is ready to erupt, the nearby teeth can move into the space where the primary tooth used to be, creating a lack of space in the jaw for the permanent teeth. There may not be enough room for the new tooth to come in correctly. If this crowding happens, it emerges lopsided or is not able to erupt at all. A space maintainer is placed to keep this space open for the permanent teeth and helps guide them into position. It’s a small metal device that is custom fitted to your child’s mouth, to be removed when the permanent tooth is in it’s proper place.
